(Prologue)

Tom stood rooted to the ground in fear. A minute before he had seen a raging fire, then a splash of water from the nearby pond had put it out. This was not the doing of a man, he thought, nor an accident.

The Dragon

Tom then heard a strange sound from the nearby mountain. Tom hesitated, then the same feeling that had brought him there took him over. Tom ran towards the mountain. He stopped short. He couldn’t believe his eyes. At the top of the mountain

there was a head --- a beautiful head. But it had fangs. It was the head of a dragon.

The Rider

Suddenly, a knight stepped out of the shadows. The knight said, “Take the dragon,” and he handed Tom his armor, shield, and sword.

Then, the mysterious knight pointed up at the dragon, who had silently flown down and was on its haunches. “Ride it to the palace; it knows the way. Bye!”

Tom the Knight

At last Tom was at the palace. There he was

greeted with wild cheering. It seemed that few wanted to be dragonriders.
